Interview
“This is Ryan interviewing the founder of one of the most popular religion in the world, Buddha, or Siddhartha Gautama. Mr. Gautama, would you please tell us a little about your life?”
“Well, I was born in a small kingdom near the Himalaya. It is said that my mother had a dream shortly before my birth saying that I would become a great leader. Our family belonged to the warrior caste. My father Suddhodana, ruled a group called the Shakyas, and my mother, Maya, passed away shortly after my birth.”
“And what were you like as a teenager?”
“As a young man, I am proud to say, I was very intelligent. I knew 64 languages and mastered my studies without any instructions.
“Wow! You were a genius as a teenager too! Now what was the most important part of your life?”
“When I reached 29, I realized the most important thing in my life. I was out of the palace walls, exploring the rest of the kingdom, when I saw beggars, ill people, and people broken down by age with no home and nowhere to go. Seeing this I was truly aware of suffering and I became very upset. I realized what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. I wanted to search for the Truth, Enlightenment, and a way to rise above suffering.”
“How did you look for this “truth, enlightenment, and a way to rise above suffering”?”
“I left my beautiful wife, Yasodhara as well as my lovely son, Rahula and my palace and the fact that I was a prince to study with priests.”
“Wow. It must have been very hard for you, leaving your family like that.”
“Yes it was hard. But I had to, in order to find my goals.”
“So did you achieve your goals after leaving your family?”
“Yes! Of course! In the age of 35, I finally achieved my goals. I sat under a tree and reached full enlightenment. I wanted to share my discoveries about the nature of life and suffering, so I traveled around the world teaching others. And in a blink of an eye, BOOM, a new religion.”
“There is a quote you once said, “Our life is shaped by our mind; we become what we think.” what do you mean by that?”
“It means if you think positively every day, you will have a happy life. But if you just complain all the time, you will have a sad life. Our minds shape our lives.”
“Thank you Buddha! Have a nice day.”

Dear Chris,
My name is Ruhey and I am in love with a handsome man named Thamby. He is 27 years old and is a priest in a Hindu temple. But as a Sudra, the unskilled worker, I cannot marry a Brahmin, or a priest. My family was born to serve the three upper classes, the Vaishya, Kshatriya, and of course the Brahmins as slaves for the rest of our lives. We work for a Vaishya, or skilled traders, merchants, and minor officials as slaves.
Anyway, Thamby and I want to get married, but due to the unfair caste system, which determines what job you will have and who you will marry, that is not possible. Thamby suggested we should run away together under the cover of night. But I can’t imagine my life without my family. Also, I don’t want Thamby’s reputation to be deteriorated, leveling mine. What should I do?
Ruhey in Harappa
Dear Ruhey,
Oh no! That is terrible! I suggest that you wait until the caste system is overthrown. There were a lot of complains about the caste system from many others. I predict that it will be overthrown by the government soon. Also you could look for another man while waiting. To hurry up the process, create a strike against the caste system!

Short Story

Ruhy Patel
A rotund boy sat in his gold plated chair, at the end of a long table, screaming for more sweets. His face and beautiful silk outfit were covered in sugar and tears streaked down his face. The maid scurried away to get more shaking her head ever so slightly. The queen walked in to the room and upon seeing the distressed child her frown deepened.
“My poor boy, how dare they not serve you, I shall dismiss the maid, where is that scoundrel.”
“Aya,” the queen screamed, “you shall not work at this castle anymore, go away.”
“But miss I was going to-“
“GO!” the queen interrupted, “never return”
The maid hurried away, tears streaming down her dirty face, and the queen turned on her heel with a huff, dragging the clingy young prince by the arm.
***
The sky lightened with pink and orange as the sun rose in the morning. The prince and the queen stepped out of the chariot for the daily morning walk. The usual scowl present on the prince’s pudgy face, and the usual disapproving frown on the queen’s face. The streets of the local markets were teeming with life by now and lowly commoners hurried by the queen, hoping for an excuse to talk to her. A gaggle of school age boys stood under the shining window of the toymaker’s shop. A shiny new toy soldier stood proudly in the window sill, gleaming for the world bravely. The young prince’s eyes widened and he slipped away from his proud mother unnoticed.
Infatuated with the toys in the store wandering the small shop, some time passed by. When, finally he turned to find his mother and her guards as before, they were nowhere in sight.
***
Panicked the prince wandered from tree to tree, but the darkness made it hard to distinguish one apart from another. Cold, hungry, scared and all alone he sat down whimpering softly to himself. Suddenly a twig snapped in the distance. Footsteps neared him, getting closer and closer until he squealed, the footsteps stopped.
“Who’s there?” a woman’s voice called.
“M-me.” the prince said his voice shaky with fear.
“Is that the prince, your highness, my goodness” Aya, the maid said coming into view. “You should be home with your mother, where are your guards and escorts?”
“I-I-I'm lo-o-ost.” He whimpered looking up at his favorite servant, her kind eyes staring back searchingly, yet piteously.
“Come,” Aya said, worry creasing her forehead, “come with me, I will let you wait with my family till morning, and then we will find the way home.” She held out a grimy warm hand. Frowning the prince took her hand and walked slowly beside the old amid, her gentle arm guiding him.
***
“Ahh, here we are.” Aya murmured softly. They stopped at the edge of a grimy little town. The central square was a fenced area with a few starved looking animals. Sloppy huts surrounded the square, four or five to a side. It looked as though the town was settling for the evening. Aya led the prince to the second house on the right side of the square.
“Welcome home.” She said
The door swung open, bright yellow candlelight streamed out.
“Mama Mama.” A scrawny girl ran to Aya’s arms. After a quick hug with her mother she turned her small head to face the young prince.
“Who you.” She asked, and then slapped her hand over her mouth. “Prince! Mama looky.” She squealed.
The prince’s scowl loosened a little at the tiny girl who looked so much like her mother. Her personality was like the same too.
“I know you are taking me to work tomorrow, is that why he is here?”
“Oh, baby child, I don’t have a job anymore.” Aya sighed then smiled.
The prince hung his head; it was all his fault for making her leave the castle and ruined her life all because of his stupid sweets. He loved his maid Aya; she raised him from a baby. The little girl interrupted his thoughts.
“What are we going to do mommy, are we going to have to leave our home, huh?” she said her tiny face serious black eyes shining with tears.
Aya smiled and folded the girl into her arms, “as long as we have each other we will be okay, we’ll manage.”
Something stirred deep inside the prince’s heart, he felt for the young girl and her mother, who without trying had changed him.
“No, no you mustn’t leave please,” the prince said looking into Aya’s eyes and a tear left his eyes. “I am sorry for everything, thank you, I need you, stay with us me and mother. Please.” Aya smiled and reached out for a hug, squeezing the prince. Shutting his eyes he realized that nothing could pay for love, friendship and family. Not all the gold in the world, and he wouldn’t give it up for anything either.

Brutal Barracks Attack in Sparta
Last night thirty-two men were killed in a brutal attack on a Spartan barracks. This attack occurred nine kilometers outside Sparta itself. The guards on the scene say that shield were stolen in addition to the massacre. They also believe that approximately thirty armed crooks, maybe even more were involved. The Spartan inspectors say that the gang members were probably armed with assassin knives, bows, arrows, broad swords, and even a battering ram.
Soldiers from Sparta have been dispatched to intercept this gang. Investigators are now saying that this particular gang may be connected to many of the recent robberies and crimes in local areas. The oligarchy of Sparta has assured us that they will deal swiftly with this ever growing threat.
This most recent attack has left twenty Sentries dead and twelve more in critical condition. The guards believe the thieves used grappling hooks and scaling ladders to scale the initial wall; killing one guard and disabling two other sentries guarding the door. They used a battering ram to penetrate the barracks, murdering yet another sentry. They then brutally annihilated five guards that patrolled the corridor before gaining access to one of the sleeping quarters and attacked the sleeping men there before they knew what hit them. This roused the neighboring rooms and the men quickly gathered their weapons and armor, but the infiltrators had already made their escape.
“It was the worst attack of the barracks in ten years. I can’t believe Ares would let this happen to us,” said Alexander, a surviving sentry.
The generals request the names of the fallen not be given at this time out of respect of their comrades. Although it is unclear how these buglers were able to obtain the weaponry, plan such a calculated attack or even what their motives are at this time; what is clear is that these people are very dangerous and should be apprehended immediately.

Assassination of Julius Caesar: Impeach the Senators!
A week after the assassination of our Dictator Julius Caesar, the convicted masterminds of this plot; Tillious Cimber, Servilius Casca, Decimus Brutus, Marcus Brutus, Minucius, and Rubrius, and 54 others are facing death. The conspirers met a few times in the public and in the privet confines of their homes. They had grown tired of Caesars constant selfishness and his declaration of his being dictator for life. They came to the conclusion that the only way to resolve this problem was to assassinate Caesar. Many plots were proposed, and ideas of when to perform the endeavor were thrown about; However only one idea was logical. Assassinate Caesar as he sat alone in the Senate, where non-senators were not admitted and they could hide daggers underneath their togas. They continued on with their plot and killed their ruler. Caesar was stabbed over thirty times, however a physician confirmed that only one stab was considered fatal. These men have a committed terrible crime but their many years of service to our land and people deserve recognition. As they face exile or death, I propose that we impeach them from the Imperial Senate and save them and their families the dishonor of public execution. The murder of our leader is devastating, and at a time of great prosperity, we take back a few steps back. In one week time a public vote will be held to decide what is to become of these men. In the main time the will remain in the senate, their voting rights suspended. Please, vote to impeach these men for if we don’t they will be removed by force and a public execution will be held. Great shame will come upon there families name, and they will forevermore be remembered by one man’s blunder. To remove them from office will save their good name, and they will be exiled, never to return to the lands of the great Roman Empire. You have much to repay these public servants, so give it back and do the honorable thing.

Our Darkened Years
Do you remember the time when we, the people of Crete, thrived? Those were great years, yes, but how long ago was that? Dear Cretans, we are in a recession and it is imperative that we do something about it.
Ah, you don’t believe me, I see. Well, when was the last time you saw an overseas trade boat in the dock, or a farmer growing food for someone besides their own family? When was the last time you saw a fellow Cretan teaching others how to write or do craftwork? Do you, like many others, not remember when? Due to this rate of change, we’ll soon forget our written language and how to make many things. Cretans, we must act!
Let us start with the problem. Why is it that we are suffering? Because we have a handsome island of our own? We have never had many attackers; therefore that is not the problem. Our problem is something we cannot fix with swords and spears. Our problem is Mother Nature. Our kingdoms have crumbled due to earthquakes, and it is crucial that we do something about it!
What do I propose we do? I say we move, to the islands in the Aegean Sea and Asia Minor. Our mainland is doing it, so why not us?
If we move out of our wonderful island of Crete, we could spread Greek culture. We could start colonies. We could get the resources of other lands and the resources of Crete. My fellow Cretans, this should be our future!
What do I want you, citizens of Crete, to do? Spread this idea to all of Crete. To the King! Start gathering your belongings and saying good bye to your homeland! If you want a better future for you, your family, and your friends, move and be the first to start colonies! Get the best farm land; I’ve heard it’s first come, first serve! My fellow Cretans, this is our future!

Macedonia? Threat or Ally
Today Demosthenes preached his third philippic he had good reasoning and a great idea on how to help prepare for a Macedonian invasion. Demosthenes sees that Philip has broken his peace treaties and attacked where he knows where he can win. Philip has already conquered many lands and is growing more powerful by the second. He is one our biggest threats and he possesses the resources needed to become far more powerful than us. Philip II has practically surrounded us with his territory and there is little doubt that we will be attacked next. We cannot fall like others before us who have blindly fallen to weaker enemies because they were tricked. If we do not act and just sit, idle there is a great chance that we will be destroyed. We need to act now Demosthenes has suggested that we send out messengers to unite the Greeks against his army and send resources to our to the armies. I think that we need to prepare for battle we must attack now before Macedonia gets any stronger. We need to have a government that sees beyond the lies of a traitor. We have been weakened by the many wars that have recently occurred and inner turmoil has weakened us further but we still must stand against are enemies and face the challenges ahead. Macedonia is growing very fast and they have broken almost all of its peace treaties. I think everyone should be able to see the threat that Macedonia represents and if our government can’t see it I definitely think it is time for change. I think that the people of Greece need to start acting if the government doesn’t. I believe that many others can see this threat as well as other cities in Greece. Action must be taken to prevent our doom. As Demosthenes said “We need not speculate about our future but to assure it will be disastrous if do not act now.” For all the people who think Macedonia are a threat to all of our lives you should say so in our next town meeting. We need to change our ways to lead to good not sit idle and fail.

Hermes Has Disappeared!
By: Gillis Wang, Bolognapolis Representative
Travelers, fishermen, and tradesmen have lately been experiencing difficulties and becoming misfortunate. The cause for this ruckus is because Hermes has gone missing from society! This will affect their direct lives but will eventually affect the lives of you and me.
Hermes, messenger of the gods. He is also the god of merchants and commerce, athletes and travel, public speaking, shepherds and thieves. His command is wide spread.
Without this character in our society, everything eventually will come crashing down.
We have lately been informed by major agencies like the Ancient Greek Polise Department and the National Board of Investigation that Hermes was not present at the most recent press and Olympian conferences. We’ve also been contacted by the “Big Three”.
Zeus reported that he last saw Hermes helping as a spy and messenger in the Battle of Marathon. He also states that he may have passed down to Hades’ Underworld to recover from his long, 26 mile run from the Marathon Plains back to the city.
Hades response to the question was: “What? No one ever visits me, whether they are here for business or for leisure, no one comes! There’s nothing for him to do here!” Hades later said he hasn’t seen or heard from his brother for over two months. “And I don’t really care,” he says. But he does know about his disappearance from rumors and also has been informed about the victory runner from Marathon. According to Hades, there has been close to no action regarding Hermes, politically or leisurely.
Poseidon was able to provide the same amount of information Hades had. To add to that, he says, “It makes sense that Hermes and that messenger are somehow connected”. He also said that a God would be able to recover much more quickly than the time that he has been missing.
NBI has provided us Intel. However, it cannot be written down or said for it is not final. It is still an open case.
Based on the information, I would like to suggest that somewhere along the lines, Pheidippides and Hermes are connected.
As Representative of the Strait of Salamis, I propose that everyone be on the lookout for further clues on the disappearance of Hermes and the possible whereabouts. Any clues, please report to the NBI.

On Democracy: Direct or Representative?
Cleisthenes recently proposed a new idea to Greek civilians, a democracy. In this alleged ‘new government,’ everyone gets an opportunity to have an impact on the decisions we make. Apparently Cleisthenes, a native Athenian, feels that the poor don’t have enough supremacy in our community of Greece.
To give everyone an equal chance to display their opinions on upcoming evaluations and initiatives, every Athenian man (male over the age of XVIII) would have to meet at a certain place to present their conclusions on both innovative and conventional standing regulations, and regulations still yet to be determined. This meeting would be called the Assembly. Many of our citizens claim this is a problem; as do I. To maintain a healthy and prosperous lifestyle, we hardworking Athenians must continue our work, so that we do not starve. Soon, as there have been disagreements going on between us for quite some time, it is predicted that an attack by Persia will transpire in the next few decades. This could also conflict with this atypical proposition.
Epiktitos, a local Athenian, qualifies to partake in the Assembly whenever it is required. However, it is proven that this might not be the best solution, because even though Epiktitos is a poor sheep herder, his job matters, too.
“It is not our best concept,” he says of the democracy. “I make a living as a herder, which requires me to keep a close eye on my sheep. I cannot do that in frequent Assemblies, and my job would gradually become nonexistent.”
I have met with Epiktitos, and others who feel the same way. Only a limited amount of representatives has been determined to be the most desirable conclusion. It is a stretch, but we have attempted and succeeded in more problematic conditions in the past. Choosing the representatives in a lottery would also be advantageous in this situation.
It is our obligation, as the citizens of Athens, to revolt against what is wrong, and this time, if we don’t, it could destroy us. When it really matters, remind yourselves that you are strong, independent individuals, and we can get past these clearly difficult times. Since we have had difficulties with oligarchy in the past, it is clearly not the answer. A limited number of representatives is the answer. It is the one that we have been searching for to end this confusing era. The Persians can’t stomp all over us, and we must remind them of that. Make your decision now: a strong, methodical representative democracy, or a weak, haphazard direct democracy?

Germanic barbarians invade Rome
Christopher Farnin
Our government has failed us! Because of disease Germanic tribes and a diminished economy, Germanic forces have entered our borders!! The Ostrogoths, Visigoths, Franks, Vandals, Angles, and Saxons are slowly pressing our empires land.
These barbarians are from the marshes to the north. They come in search of a warm place to live and farm. They also wish to plunder our wealthy cities. Our relationship with one of the tribes attacking, the Visigoths, has been rocky for a while now. We provided them with hospitality for a modest price, and in return they give us a rebellion, and defeat a legion of our soldiers at the Battle of Adrianople.
Because of our defeat, we were forced to surrender land to them. Then the Germans gathered their soldiers and led their armies into our empire. They have slowly taking our land, and in our current state, we cannot push them back. We fear that a significant amount of land may be lost because of these Barbarians.
We must act now if our empire is to survive. All citizens must join the army. These Germans are cold-hearted, and will kill without mercy. However, there is still hope. Our soldiers are stronger, and better trained. We have a bigger army, and the tactics to destroy them. We have been defending our empire for 800 years. We will not let a couple Germanic tribes over-throw us. We are stronger, smarter, and nobler then these Barbarians We are Rome, and we will succeed.

The Caste Systems
Ruhy Patel
Per. 2/3
As the rich nobles and the high princes ride through the streets in fancy chariot led by high strutting horses, in the outskirts of the town the “untouchables” hope they can make it through the day with enough food and water.
India believes in a system called the caste system, many people think that it is a way of keeping order in people’s daily lives. But I think it is a way of bringing pain and hopelessness to society. The caste system isn’t a system of organization it is a system of separation an segregation. Many people live like the Sarin family on the outskirts of town. This young family supports two young girl, a baby boy, a mother and a father. They live in a roadside hut made of mud bricks. The father is unemployed and the mother works as a maid earning barely enough money for the food scraps on their table. All the children do not attend school and must go beg for money to find some joy in their lives. What’s worse is they are doomed to stay that way for the rest of their lives. Their fates were made at birth and are to remain that way according to the caste system Silotopia.
While many live in poverty, many also live luxury. Princes and nobles ride upon their high horses without a thought or a mind of the people who need their help. They have never known they exist, haven’t cared they exist and they will never know they exist. Silotopia is our society our world and we must work to improve it, to make it a better place for our citizens. It shouldn’t matter what we are like everyone should be considered equal no matter what their paycheck is or how they live. But we will never get anywhere if we do not work against this discrimination in our society.
I have tried to send ideas to the raja asking him to get rid of the caste system or to offer oppertunities to the poor and the “untouchables to change their lives. I have tried to ask the raja for a connection of different societies. We must work together though; one person alone is not enough to fix our society. Silotopia should be the one to make the change, help to make our society a better place for everyone.

ZEUS GONE MISSING!!
By Gavin Coigne
Last night Zeus went to bed safe and sound. In the morning he was just gone without a trace. My bet is that someone kidnapped him to try and gain power or ransom money. I think this because Zeus is the most powerful Greek god and people would pay a very high ransom to have him back or to be in his position of power. He wouldn’t simply disappear without a trace or a note on his own something must’ve happened to him. There is no way to tell if he has been kidnapped yet but that is my strong suspicion as I have said earlier. I will be trying to organize a search party to find him but if not I will also be counting on the public to help me. I will also be offering a VI talent reward for anyone who finds him and brings him back to me at Olympus. Please anyone who has any information about his disappearance please contact me.

A growing threat in Carthage
Christopher Farnin
As you know already know, the state of Carthage is a huge threat, but the threat is greater than you might expect. Our government has decided to finally end the problem in Carthage by sending an army to raid it. I couldn’t agree more with this decision.
Carthage is a bigger asset than we expect. It is in control of a huge trading empire. Conquering this dangerous state would lead us to almost unlimited trade resources. And would give us trade routes to places like northern Africa and southern Europe. Conquering Carthage would be a great achievement just to acquire their trade empire let alone the other wonders conquering this civilization would be.
Sicily, Sicily, Sicily. Conquering this menacing state would finally end the trouble in Sicily. We have been fighting in Sicily for years we have suffered countless losses, and we still can’t push them out. Because of Carthage’s strong navy, we are having much trouble in driving them out. Luckily, we have put together our own navy to demolish theirs.
Attacking Carthage would also prevent them from expanding. We have reason to believe that Carthage is expanding its borders to a place in southern Spain. If we wait to attack them, they could be able to flank our empire from the North, and the South which would cut off all methods of retreat. Our spies have also told us that Carthage’s greatest general Hannibal is planning a huge attack of over 40,000 soldiers!!!
We must attack now if we are to survive. I am putting all of my power as a senator and as a citizen to start our attack before Hannibal starts his, and I advise you to do the same. It’s all come down to attack or be attacked.
